性愛往往乏味，多數人終其一生複製著常態性交模式。當中最無趣的，莫過於異性戀常態下為了繁衍後代的男女陰道交。其實性應當是複雜有趣的，而性愉虐創造了種種可能；藉著開發皮膚表裡層的快感區域，愉虐性愛擺脫以生殖基礎為前提的乏味性交公式。
成人遊樂場
憑藉內斂靜謐的攝影鏡頭，Paola Calvo執導的《愉虐秘境》帶領觀眾一窺「Schwelle 7」——由編舞家Felix Ruckert創辦的身體展演空間。這是由精神延伸至性愛，與探索身體、暴力實踐的場域。電影中，參與者們與Ruckert暢談哲思理念與情慾想像，並實踐身體從冥想到性狂歡的歷程。位於德國柏林的「Schwelle 7」究竟是什麼？以文字來描述顯得抽象。簡單地說，它是成人的遊樂場，參與者通過性與角色扮演獲得樂趣，經由痛楚與傷害去兌換前所未有的愉悅。
劇中受訪者曾形容「Schwelle 7」宛如魔法，召喚出隔絕常態現實的親密空間。Ruckert結合藝術身體展演與存在主義思辨，讓人們拋棄道德桎梏，打破公共場所對於行為表達的框架限制。其中參與實踐的邊緣性慾，包含：繩縛、穿刺、著乳膠衣、滴蠟刀割、主奴調教、水蛭吸血等概括BDSM範疇的行為；更甚者，還有各種性器官探索：如撥弄陰唇介紹快感來源、手指插入肛門摸索前列腺、群交愛撫等。透過這些實驗，參與者踰越規範而產生快感。
聚焦情感傳遞的導演
委內瑞拉出生的Paola Calvo原是平面攝影師。她對於影像敘事懷抱強大熱忱，以致前往柏林的德國電影電視學院研習紀錄片製作。《愉虐秘境》是她首部執導長片。起初她從未踏入過類似情慾空間，直至朋友強烈建議下造訪Xplore柏林慾望藝術節。她在一個「Schwelle 7」的工作坊體驗裸身爬行膝蓋活動中，體驗到未曾享受的愉悅與尊重。過往偏見在那時候消弭，她遂決定以此為題拍攝。
電影在拍攝初期曾遭遇困難，攝影團隊因人數成為障礙。導演最後決定獨自手持攝影機，像小貓般三不五時自己跑去劇場，時程長達兩年。依據主題可想見拍攝者許多人對曝光有所顧忌，導演說：「我們的社會提供生活身份多重的可能性。但有些人希望將興趣嚴格保密。」她不願拍攝遮掩隱匿的紀錄片，經過協商討論，影片聚焦在性工作者Mara與創辦者Felix，呈現他們暢所欲言並清楚己身作為的狀態。
儘管導演對描繪性慾感興趣，但她從未製作過色情電影。她認為色情電影激勵人們探索性慾；不過，她不定義《愉虐秘境》為色情影像（ pornographic），因電影傳遞出情感，而性吸引力恰巧包含其中。就此論述可知悉，電影並非獵奇捕捉，而是圍繞在人物態度：未知領域的開放態度。
正常思辨與「公共－性」
電影中有段挑釁的二元對照：牙醫與BDSM。日常生活中，牙醫診療過程中的痛楚往往被認定為醫病所需的「正常」；反觀BDSM在普羅大眾眼裡卻是道德淪喪的獨特性癖。情慾不該是符合主流意識型態的異性戀生殖想像，個體情慾理所當然都是平等權威，抵抗社會定義對差異的泯滅。鑽牙與穿戴式陽具幹肛門同為正常，沒有人該為「爽」感到羞恥。或者該說，羞恥是「爽」的情慾調劑，不該淪為道德評判。
在記錄的敘事外，電影有一點很有趣：即攝影機的存在。作為觀眾直視影像，我們往往忽略攝影機作為眼球。當這顆眼球放置銀幕時，私領域躍升成為公領域。在《愉虐秘境》中，攝影機與參與者保持親密連結，銀幕將觀眾拉入（可能不舒服）的位置，以視覺體驗身體近距離接觸（即性帶來的）愉悅和痛苦。誠如導演受訪提及：「攝影機提供反思映照，讓被攝者意識到發生何事。」我不禁猜想，拍片這個舉動，是否也是將「Schwelle 7」轉化成「公共－性」（public sex）？
近代資本主義社會中，家庭成為基本生產單位，社會建構將「性」規範在自家臥房（私領域）。「公共－性」在公眾眼球底下通常是負面輿論評價，譬如說臺灣曾發生的「農安趴」、「台鐵性愛趴」。儘管《愉虐秘境》的性實踐（包含觀眾）多數超過三人，符合公共空間定義，但它始終限制在「Schwelle 7」的閉鎖空間。攝影機打破邊界，讓性變得公開，被攝者明白己身性行為透過電影被看見，羞恥蕩然不僅存在當下更袒露於銀幕。觀影過程裡，觀眾彷彿成為「公共－性」的共同實踐者，與被攝者們抵抗與臣服公共場所中賦予的公權力。於是，愉虐不只存在祕境，透過觀看，打破規訓約束，擴及己身，你與我也參與了這場愉虐實驗。
